Overview

The Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning (PHAC) Program prepares students for entry-level positions in the plumbing, heating and air conditioning industry. Students receive training in all aspects of PHAC systems and water pumps. Internship opportunities, with local employers, provide valuable on-the-job training. Upon successful completion of the one-year program, students receive a PHAC Certificate and have the opportunity to sit for the Journeyman license and industry competency examination.

Fort Hays Tech | North Central Plumbing, Heating, and Air-conditioning program is in alignment with the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) CIP code 47.0201 Heating, Air Conditioning, Ventilation, and Refrigeration Maintenance Technology/Technician. A program that prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to repair, install, service, and maintain the operating condition of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. Includes instruction in diagnostic techniques, the use of testing equipment and the principles of mechanics, electricity, and electronics as they relate to the repair of heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems.

Program Outcomes

  • Apply refrigeration cycle.
  • Acknowledge electrical theory.
  • Apply regulations of the Uniform Plumbing Code.
  • Be aware of high and low volt circuits.
  • Apply gas heating.
  • Recognize drain waste vent systems.
  • Repair and recognize water distribution.
  • Students will have the opportunity to earn the following credentials:
    • OSHA 10 
    • EPA 608 Universal
    • NCCER

Additional Notes

Optional:  The Plumbing Heating and Air-Conditioning program can be combined with other construction trade programs (Carpentry/Cabinetmaking, or Heavy Equipment Operation) to achieve an Associate of Applied Science degree in Building Construction Technology.
