The Construction Technology Program is based upon the National Center for Construction, Education, and Research (NCCER) curriculum. The program is designed to provide the skills, knowledge and quality workmanship necessary to become a successful carpenter or cabinetmaker. Students gain hands-on experience in drafting blueprints, designing cabinetry products, framing, roofing and interior/exterior finishing. Students apply those skills to construct project homes on the Beloit and Hays campuses. Upon successful completion of the one-year program, students receive a Construction Technology Certificate.
Students,
This tool list is for students enrolling in the Carpentry/ Cabinetmaking program at North Central Kansas Tech College in Beloit, Kansas. The tools on this list are a guideline to follow and the prices are from local vendors so they could vary 10%-15% higher or lower depending on where you get them.
If you already have some of the tools on the list, I don't expect you to go out and purchase new ones. The brands of tools on the list are just an example of what I expect you to have as far as the quality of the tools. If you would rather buy a Craftsman, Makita, DeWalt or another quality cordless drill, that is fine. The key is quality!! The same goes with any of the items on the list, such as the framing hammer brand or the brand on the screwdrivers or chisels. One of the things that can be a problem is the staplers. If you want to use my staples, then the staplers need to be able to accept Arrow T-50 type staples. I will not buy staples for other brands. The tool box always seems to be an issue so feel free to buy a poly type tool box or another type, just so it is big enough to hold your tools. Many of the tool boxes available can double as a step stool or a work bench, as well as storing your tools. Several students are purchasing the Milwaukee pack out boxes and they seem to be quite handy for storing and organizing your tools. The regular carpenter box on the list can be hard to find, so just make sure you have a tool box large enough for your tools and preferably one that can be locked. Another item that I run into problems with is the framing square. Make sure you purchase a framing square that has the rafter tables on it. We work a lot with the framing square, and if you have one that doesn't have the rafter tables on it, you have to run down one of mine, out in the shop, and then try to catch back up on what we are talking about.
The reason for this list at enrollment is so you will have all summer to shop for the tools. If you need to order tools, give the vendors some notice so you will have what you need when the new school year rolls around. Hope this helps and hope to see you in the fall!!
Thank you,
Mike Cheney Carpentry/Cabinetmaking Instructor-NCKTC
