The Department of Federal Motor Carriers has changed the regulations to obtain a CDL starting February 7, 2022. The information below reflects the changes.
Fort Hays Tech | North Central has a proven, successful, year-round CDL Program. We are committed to helping you or your employees with accurate, up-to-date, and comprehensive “Hands-on-Training”. Drive Training classes can be taken at the either the Beloit or Hays Campus.
The Fort Hays Tech | North Central's Commercial Driver License (CDL) program utilizes online classroom instruction and on-the-road driving time to prepare students for the Department of Motor Vehicles Commercial Driver’s License Examination. Coursework prepares students for all three license classes (A, B and C), as well as endorsement for tanks, doubles and triples, hazardous materials and passenger and school buses. A State of Kansas Examiner administers the license examination.
Per Federal regulations, ELDT Behind the Wheel training must be completed within one year of the completion of ELDT Theory training.
CDL 105 — Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT)-Theory Course $434.00 plus a $50 application fee:
Required Course
ELDT provides the curriculum as required by the Department of Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration. This theory course focuses on basic operation, safety procedures, advanced operations, vehicle systems and reporting, and additional non-driving activities such as handling cargo. Students must complete each module at 80% to successfully pass the course.
Registration, application fee and full payment is required to save your seat in a class.
Students must be 18 years of age and have a valid Kansas Driver License.

Per Federal regulations, ELDT Behind the Wheel training must be completed within one year of the completion of ELDT Theory training.
*The student MUST go to their local DMV to test for their Commercial Learner Permit before or after the ELDT class. It is required BEFORE the student registers in the Drive Training course. The ELDT class is not a test prep for the Learner Permit.
NOTE: Students who pass ELDT Theory and have their Learner Permit will need to read the information below and follow the steps to enroll in the CDL 115 Drive Training Course at Fort Hays Tech | NC. You will enroll in each class separately.
CDL 115 — Drive Training Course $1,884.00 plus $50 application, if student has not taken classes with Fort Hays Tech | NC in the past 5 years:
Required 2 Credit Hour Course
In the drive-train portion of CDL, students will have the opportunity to apply techniques and theory as presented in ELDT. Students will learn on-the-road and range driving skills. Students will cover safety, vehicle inspection, advanced operation, and cargo securement. Students can register for the Drive Training after acquiring a commercial Learner Permit from a Kansas Department of Motor Vehicles office and completing the ELDT training curriculum. This class will prepare students for the CDL drive test, as well as complete the ELDT course requirements.
