Resident Responsibilities
Living on campus may represent the first “contractual” agreement you have ever signed, if not the most important to date. As a resident on campus, you have a right to an appropriate environment in your housing facilities. You are responsible for contributing positively to that environment.
Upon moving into the on-campus housing, you are responsible for the following:
1) The rules and regulations of the State of Kansas, Fort Hays Tech | North Central, and the on-campus housing. You are responsible for knowing these rules and adhering to them at all times.
2) Activities that occur within your room. Even if you’re not present or involved in the policy violation, you may be held responsible.
3) Your guests and their conduct while present in the housing units. Residents may be subject to disciplinary action because of their visitor’s behavior.
Roommate Relations
The purpose of this section is to provide you with assistance in building a positive roommate relationship. No one can do it for you, but at the same time, it’s impossible to accomplish alone. The relationship can only be successful when you and your roommates agree to work together. Learning to live successfully with your roommates may be one of the best opportunities you will ever have to learn the skills needed to live successfully with anyone.
The Roommate Contract
The secret of being successful roommates is being able to talk with each other about “things”…especially the “things” that are important to each of you. There is no substitute for knowing and understanding someone. To do that, it’s important to keep the lines of communication open. Talking about these “things” in advance won’t guarantee you’ll be compatible roommates, but your chances of getting along and avoiding problems before they start will be greatly increased. There are several questions you can ask each other to start that important communication process. If you take the time to get to know each other and help each other, you will be able to make the most of campus housing life. Also, the roommate agreement is a tool that you can continue to revise and refer to in order to help living together be more compatible.
Personal Style & Habits
This section is designed to give you a chance to find out what is important to your roommates. You may discover that you have things in common and that there are also areas of disagreement. Your purpose is to gain understanding and insight about one another, not to judge who is right or wrong. You may want to discuss the roommate agreement.

2) The time I usually go to sleep is…..
3) The time I usually wake up is…..

5) I prefer to study (when?)…..

Things to Remember
Getting to know people takes time. Don’t expect to be best friends overnight; or if you are already best friends, don’t expect too much. The way to be good roommates is to share information about yourself, your background, attitudes, habits and moods, and to hear what your roommates are telling you about the same things. Remember, be honest and try to remain open in future discussions.
For students living in the apartments (Beloit campus only); a secured 802.11n wireless Internet connection is available for computers, tablets, and gaming consoles; (Xbox, Wii and Play Stations).

Frequently Asked Questions
1) Who should my student call if something is not working properly in the room?
The student can visit the Housing Supervisor and fill out a Work Order Request which is then given to the Dorm Maintenance Supervisor.
2) What if my student and his/her roommates can’t get along?
The first step is to ask your student to discuss the concerns with his/her roommate(s) and try to resolve the conflict together. Many times, clarifying communication and expectations between roommates is the first step in successfully navigating a roommate conflict. If the conflict remains unresolved, your student should ask their Resident Assistant (RA) for advice/guidance in the situation. If issues persist, and the student does not feel that they are able to work with their RA, they are asked to talk with the Housing Supervisor, and together as a team they will work out a solution.
Remember that this is probably your child’s first time living on their own away from you. They need time to grow and make adjustments in order to be successful adults. It is best that as parents you strive to have your child handle these situations as described above and not by having you call the school. Legally, after your child turns 18 and moves onto our campus, we are not allowed to discuss with you anything without their permission.
3) What laundry facilities are available?
There is a laundry room on the north side of the Housing Supervisor’s house for on-campus students to use. It is equipped with coin-operated washers and dryers that only accept quarters. The student will need to also furnish their own laundry detergent and other laundry supplies. There is also another self-service laundry mat in downtown Beloit.
4) How long does the housing contract last?
The housing contract lasts from the first day of school until graduation. These contracts are legally binding.
5) Can students redecorate their rooms?
Students may not nail fixtures to the walls, floors, ceilings, or furniture; drill holes or affix decals; or tamper with electrical or telecommunications wiring. In addition, students cannot paint their rooms. Your student should contact the Housing Supervisor for details.
6) What type of bed linens are needed?
Your student can bring any type of personal linen. The beds are extra long twin.
7) Where can my student receive mail?
Mail is delivered in the area right outside of the laundry room on the east side of the dorms. Each room has a mailbox and each student will have their own mail key. Use the following address to send mail to your student…
Student’s Name
2000 Campus Lane
Student’s apartment number (ex. 3A)
Beloit, KS 67420
8) Should my student purchase renters’ insurance before arriving on campus? What happens if personal belongings are stolen from the room?
Although precautions are taken to maintain adequate security, the college cannot assume responsibility for the loss or damage to student possessions from any cause whatsoever. Students are encouraged to carry personal property insurance. This is often available as a rider on the parent’s homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy. If personal items are stolen or missing, your student should contact their RA and Housing Supervisor immediately. Students are encouraged to always lock their doors and close their windows when they are gone.
Are you a people person? Do you want experience supervising your peers? If so, apply to be a Resident Assistant.
